Kong: Skull Island is a great King Kong movie. Maybe the best King Kong movie. It isn’t really a remake of King Kong (1933). It’s more of a re-imagining of the whole franchise. It’s also part of a pretty good series of American kaiju movies which includes Godzilla (2014).

In 1973, scientists find a lost island hidden inside a perpetual superstorm. A government organization of cryptid hunters visits the island accompanied by the U.S. military. It all goes to hell when Kong appears and swats down all their helicopters. The survivors include some scientists, some soldiers, an expert tracker, a photojournalist, and a World War II fighter pilot who has been stuck on the island for 30 years. This motley crew must escape the island full of enormous, hostile creatures.
