The Ghost – 1963 – Italy

Scotland, 1910: In a Gothic mansion, a doctor (Dr. John Hichcock) researches a treatment for his own crippling injuries. His questionable cure involves injecting himself with a cocktail of lethal poisons. He is depressed and suicidal, and constantly seeks pity from his assistant (Dr. Charles Livingstone) and his wife (Margaret Hichcock). When Margaret stops him from committing suicide, he says “Let me do it. I’m just a living corpse.” Eventually, Margaret and Charles hook up. Margaret nags her lover to kill her pathetic husband, so Charles gives the old man an extra helping of poison.

Burning Dead

Jim returns to his hometown fifteen years after its destruction in a catastrophic fire. Although his memories are hazy, since that day, Jim has been haunted by horrific dreams. He is so disturbed that he can’t hold a job, meet a girlfriend, or stay in one place. To confront his fears, Jim drifts about his hometown, visiting people and places he once knew. His memory of the traumatic night slowly returns, and he suffers hallucinations of walking incinerated corpses. It turns out, as a boy, Jim was apprenticed to a Satanic priest. When the priest ordered Jim to sacrifice his sweetheart, Jim refused and lit the priest on fire, leading (improbably) to the town’s fiery destruction. Now, to put the burning dead to rest, Jim confronts his dark past and reunites with his lost sweetheart.

Before I Die
is a horror anthology movie about a horror writer (with an interesting regional accent) who is writing a short story collection. One story is about a nymphomaniac who transforms into a humanoid spider and devours her sex partners. Approaching her victims, she licks her lips salaciously and says, “I love men. Yummy!” Another story is about some newlyweds at a haunted resort. Mostly they have sex in various swimming pools, but a ghost eventually appears. The last story is about a woman being killed by an asylum escapee. The movie ends with the writer becoming so entranced with his own horror fantasies that he inadvertently murders his wife.

Invitation

Some kids are playing sandlot baseball. During the game, a dorky fat kid runs into the street and is killed by a truck. Years later, the other kids become adults and are invited to a mysterious reunion. They spend the weekend at a spooky inn run by a sinister caretaker. The inn is haunted by ghostly children. The guests drink beer, roast marshmallows, and swap childhood anecdotes. One by one, they are tormented and murdered by the ghosts. After everyone dies, it is revealed that the ghost of the dorky fat kid did it all for revenge.

Dead Silence

A young couple mysteriously receives a puppet (named Billy) in the mail. That night, the husband (Jamie) returns home to find his wife dead with her tongue torn out. He relates the murder and the puppet to the legend of a ghostly ventriloquist from his hometown of Ravens Fair. Jamie drives (his bitchin’ red muscle car) to Ravens Fair to investigate. Having been away for many years, he discovers that the town has become a decrepit ruin. His estranged father has been paralyzed by a stroke, and has a new (much younger) wife. The superstitious townies refuse to discuss the ghostly ventriloquist, but numerous tongue-less corpses have been attributed to her haunting. Meanwhile, a police detective suspects Jamie for his wife’s murder, and Jamie is tormented by Billy, the diabolic puppet.

In medieval times, treasure hunters explore the Babylonian ruins of Ur and awaken a bird-like vampire monster. The vampire (named Daimon) flies to Japan and possesses the magistrate of a town. He commits various atrocities such as drinking blood, acting rude, kidnapping children, and killing a dog. A young samurai teams up with a Buddhist monk and some friendly monsters from Japanese folklore. They defeat Daimon by stabbing out his eyes.

The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow – 1959 – United States

On their quest for fun, a friendly club of teenage hot rodders struggle with juvenile delinquents, traffic cops, and stodgy parents. After the broke teens are evicted from their clubhouse, they occupy a haunted mansion. Secretly living in the mansion is Paul Blaisdell, who played the monster in The Day the World Ended (1955), It Conquered the World (1956), The She-Creature (1956), and Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957). Upset because he did not get a role in Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), he dresses in a monster suit and menaces the teens.

The Cold

In The Cold’s title sequence, ragtime music plays and various board games (including the Mad Magazine Game) are shown. Afterward, the rhyming narrator introduces the film’s plot.  “Once upon a time in a far away resort, three millionaire eccentrics played a game for fun and sport.” These demented millionaires recruit greedy weirdoes to compete in the “Game of Fear” for a million dollars. The players (a lawyer, an ex-con, two trampy women, and three country musicians) stay at a resort while the millionaires try to terrify them into leaving.

A famous jazz pianist lives in a Cape Cod island community and is engaged to an attractive wealthy woman. The pianist’s obsessed ex-girlfriend tries to blackmail him into running away with her. They argue atop a condemned lighthouse. A railing breaks and the ex-girlfriend loses her footing. The pianist has the opportunity to save her but lets her fall. She plunges to her death in the rocky ocean.

A stoic warrior, an effeminate priest, and a clumsy teenage girl search for water in a desert wasteland. They stumble into a city-like tomb where thousands of mummified corpses are posed as if going about their daily business. Also in the tomb, a clan of macho bandits searches for treasure and awakens hostile ghosts. The travelers, bandits, and ghosts eventually have a showdown.
