Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 – 1987 – Japan

Here’s the plot of Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01: A military truck gets into a car accident while transporting a prototype combat mecha. The mecha ends up in the hands of a mechanic who doesn’t bother to read the manual. He accidentally gets stuck inside and decides to joyride around and go surprise his girlfriend. The military dispatches a robotic tank to track down the mecha. The tank’s driver is a crazy guy who hates mecha, loves tanks, and has a big chip on his shoulder. While firing the tank’s gun, he licks his slobbery lips and proclaims, “This scent—this taste—war is heaven!” The mecha and the tank duel to the death inside a high-rise.

Legend of the Blue Wolves – 1996 – Japan

In the year 2199, mankind has colonized the solar system. Using powered armor suits, they wage war against robotic alien invaders called the Apocalypse. Jonathan Tyberius and Leonard Schteinberg are mecha pilots and roommates on a military space station. When Jonathan is raped by his abusive (and morbidly obese) commanding officer, Leonard rescues him and castrates the rapist. Afterward, the two form a close bond which becomes a romance. Eventually, Leonard is sent on a mission and never returns, and Jonathan later encounters him on the battlefield. Leonard’s body has been absorbed into one of the invader’s biomechanical war machines and Jonathan must destroy it.

In the futuristic metropolis of Cyber-Wood, scientists develop psychic-powered robotic suits to police the slums. In the worst slum (known as Cancer) is an evil cult led by a three-eyed masked mutant. The cultists kidnap one of Cyber-Wood’s scientists and transform him into a biomechanical monster that resembles a medieval knight wearing a kabuki wig. To destroy the monster, another scientist undergoes surgery to become an arachnid-like cyborg. The two freakish monstrosities have a showdown.

In the very near future, Tokyo is undergoing urban redevelopment. Giant bipedal vehicles called Labors demolish and erect buildings, as well as construct manmade islands in Tokyo Bay. Since their recent development, Labors have replaced all other construction and military vehicles.  Soon, Labors start behaving erratically, eventually running around without operators and going berserk. A special police task force is formed to investigate the malfunctioning Labors. They discover a mystery involving the suicide of a genius software engineer and a conspiracy that could destroy Tokyo.

In futuristic Hong Kong, scientists research “vajra” energy, which is generated from “mind shadows”. None of this makes sense, but people develop destructive psychic powers as a result. Harnessing vajra energy, ambitious corporate tycoons create psychic cyborgs and sell them to the military. One such cyborg is a young girl named Elaine (a.k.a. Genocyber). After transforming into a monster, she destroys her creators and eventually the world.

Demon Seed is an organization of masked criminals who commit robbery in robotic suits. While counting his riches, their leader Professor Demon proclaims, “When money is spent foolishly, it truly shines.” A group of geeky government agents known as the Anti-Demon Seed Team must stop Demon Seed’s crime spree. Their continual failure creates increasingly poor public relations, until one agent drunkenly suggests recruiting a cute girl as their mascot. They enlist Maron, a shy teenager with superhuman strength, and design an invulnerable yet sexy outfit for her. Under the management of the Anti-Demon Seed Team, Maron becomes a pop idol.

In a Medieval-like space-faring future, knights known as “headdliners” pilot bipedal robots called “mortar headds”. For unclear reasons, operating the mortar headds requires a “fatima”—a beautiful female android copilot. Headdliners and fatimas share a strong emotional bond, and are paired in a highly ritualized process. This relationship is the focal point of The Five Star Stories. On a desert planet, a mortar headd engineer reconnects with a fatima he helped raise. Against the wishes of some petty nobles, the fatima selects the engineer as her headdliner. The two flee the planet under threat of death.

Project A-ko

Project A-ko’s opening replicates the premise of the anime series Macross (1982). An alien spaceship crashes into the futuristic Graviton City, turning it to a crater. A decade later, the city is rebuilt as a sprawling suburban utopia. All of this is mostly unrelated to Project A-ko’s plot.

At Graviton High, schoolgirls A-ko and B-ko fight over the friendship of another girl named C-ko. A-ko is a girl with inexplicable superhuman strength. B-ko is an evil genius who builds giant robots. And C-ko might be an alien princess. A-ko and B-ko battle each other with martial arts and sci-fi weapons. Meanwhile, aliens invade and unleash a horde of spaceships and spider robots. A massive battle ensues. A-ko and B-ko must rescue C-ko and brawl their way out.

Run by a supercomputer called Gaia, Olympus is a utopia inhabited by humans, cyborgs, and bioroids (bioengineered robots). SWAT team members Dunan (a human woman) and Bularios (a cyborg man) are on a mission to eliminate terrorists intent on destroying Gaia. With guns, mecha, and moxie, the pair bust perps and cause collateral damage.

M.D. Geist & M.D. Geist 2: Death Force – 1986 & 1996 – Japan

Super soldier M.D. Geist (M.D. stands for “most dangerous”) awakens from hibernation on a war ravaged planet. After slaughtering gang members and military troopers for awhile, he begins a secret mission to infiltrate the Brain Palace and destroy the robotic army Death Force. Since M.D. Geist is deranged, he instead controls Death Force to destroy all life.

In M.D. Geist 2: Death Force, Death Force robots have overrun the planet. The megalomaniac super soldier M.D. Krauser commands the remaining humans against M.D. Geist and the robots. Eventually Krauser, Geist, and everyone else are annihilated by a “jignitz bomb”.
