Curse of the Puppet Master – 1998 – United States

Dr. Magrew (who isn’t a real doctor) runs a museum of curiosities somewhere in the South. In his collection are Andre Toulon’s living puppets, which are now friendly and domesticated. Obsessed with making a living puppet of his own, Magrew hires a local woodcarver named Robert “Tank” Winsley to carve the perfect puppet body. Robert is a dimwitted but talented carver, and he begins carving the puppet with possessed fury. The plot thickens as local police question Magrew about the disappearance of his last assistant—another woodcarver. Also, Robert and Jane, Magrew’s daughter, fall in love. Magrew opposes the relationship and says ominously to Jane, “Don’t get attached to Robert. He might not be around forever.” Eventually, Robert finishes carving the puppet, which looks like a 1950s-style robot. Magrew lures Robert into a magic ritual and transfers Robert’s soul into the puppet. Enraged at Magrew’s betrayal, Robert shoots a lightning bolt from his robot arm and incinerates Magrew. The movie ends suddenly as Jane witnesses the murder and screams, “ROBERT! NO!”

Puppet Master 4 – 1993 – United States

Andre Toulon (now a ghost) is back with his gang of murderous puppets. In a hellish dimension decorated with pyramids and skulls, bug-eyed demons plot to destroy Toulon’s immortal soul (or something). Apparently, the elixir Toulon uses to animate his puppets was theirs until Toulon stole it. The demons mail boxes full of imp-like creatures to Earth to track down Toulon. Meanwhile, some young people are having a sleepover at the abandoned Bodega Bay Inn (the setting of the first two Puppet Master movies). Two of them are scientists studying artificial intelligence, and one is a psychic. They stumble upon Toulon’s old puppets and reanimate them. They also find Toulon’s ancient Egyptian Oujia board and accidentally summon the demon imps into the inn. Fortunately for them, in this Puppet Master movie, Toulon’s puppets are good guys. They team up with the young people and defeat the imps. In the end, the protagonist is mentored by Toulon’s ghost to become the next Puppet Master.

Matthew “Matty” Matthews is a forensic psychology student visiting Atwater Commons. He explores the town while listening to an audio book of “Dirt Boy”. One day, in a seemingly hypnotic trance, he visits a murder site described in the novel. After uncovering a corpse, he begins to suspect the novel is real. Matty reports his find to the police who behave with cryptic animosity. Possessed by curiosity, he explores more and uncovers more bodies. The people of Atwater Commons respond to his snooping with paranoia and hostility. They spy on Matty, vandalize his car, and broadcast threats (disguised as gardening advice) on the town radio station. As Matty delves deeper into the secrets of Atwater Commons, he uncovers the idyllic town’s dark history. In doing so, he is also forced to confront his own past as a heroin addict.
