Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma – 1989 – Japan

1573 Japan: On a mission for his clan, a young ninja named Hikage tracks his best friend (and fellow ninja) Marou across the countryside. Seemingly possessed, Marou attacked Hikage and now Hikage reluctantly must bring him to justice. But all is not as it seems. Marou is actually the reincarnation of the king of demons. Using his army of undead and yoma (monsters), he perpetuates a bloody conflict between two warlords. Maybe. The film’s plot isn’t very clear.

A crew of thirteen scientists and engineers travel to a distant planet on behalf of some corporation. During the twenty year journey, they are in cryogenic sleep aboard a spaceship. While they rest, an alien bacteria infiltrates the ship. Upon waking, members of the crew die one by one as the infection enters their lungs and asphyxiates them. Soon, the bacteria transforms into a flowing mass of pincers, tentacles, and gaping maws. The body count escalates as the crew desperately searches for a way to destroy it.

Scotland, 1910: In a Gothic mansion, a doctor (Dr. John Hichcock) researches a treatment for his own crippling injuries. His questionable cure involves injecting himself with a cocktail of lethal poisons. He is depressed and suicidal, and constantly seeks pity from his assistant (Dr. Charles Livingstone) and his wife (Margaret Hichcock). When Margaret stops him from committing suicide, he says “Let me do it. I’m just a living corpse.” Eventually, Margaret and Charles hook up. Margaret nags her lover to kill her pathetic husband, so Charles gives the old man an extra helping of poison.

A noble swordsman named Hawk battles his deformed brother Voltan to save a kidnapped priestess. Hawk wields the “mindsword” which he controls telekentically. It has a glowing fist for a pommel. He teams up with a giant, an elf, a blind witch, a guy with a semi-automatic crossbow, and a conniving dwarf. Impressively, the dwarf fishes by slapping fish out of a lake with his whip. In the climactic showdown, Voltan is killed but is resurrected by an evil ghost. A sequel is suggested but hasn’t materialized.

Highlander: The Search for Vengeance – 2007 – Japan/United States

During the Roman invasion of Britain in the 1st century AD, a Briton named Colin becomes immortal after imbibing a magic potion. He no longer ages and cannot be killed except by decapitation. When the Roman general Marcus Octavius (also an immortal) kills Colin’s wife, Colin begins a campaign of vengeance lasting two thousand years. Marcus resurfaces in various historical epochs as an authoritarian leader, and Colin unsuccessfully tries to kill him each time. They duel as samurai in medieval Japan, and dogfight in planes during World War II. Eventually, Colin encounters Marcus again in post-apocalyptic New York in the year 2187 AD. Marcus has become ruler of a high-tech enclave and Colin leads a group of guerilla fighters to destroy him. Colin finally manages to kill him, but only after falling in love and realizing the pointlessness of revenge.

When a drug smuggler disappears, police detectives try to track him down. They assume that he was murdered by his underworld connections, but he is actually the victim of radioactive slime monsters. These monsters (called H-Men) are the result of fallout from hydrogen bomb testing. They can transform between humanoid and liquid form, and their touch dissolves people and absorbs them (psyche and all). The drug smuggler’s girlfriend, a young scientist, and the police team up to destroy the H-Men.

Also staying in the house is a shifty doctor, a hardnosed police detective, a bumbling private detective, a desperate gangster, a badly injured stranger, a sinister Japanese butler (wearing cadaver-like makeup), a hysterical maid, and the niece’s nerdy boyfriend.
