Blood Cult

Blood Cult – 1985 – United States

Four sorority girls are eviscerated by a cleaver-wielding murderer. The investigating sheriff links the murders to a witchcraft cult, then discovers the killer cultist is his own daughter. Wearing a severed dog’s head as mask, she kills her boyfriend and then leaps off a building. Sorry if this plot summary is vague. The DVD I watched had no sound for the last 30 minutes so I had to make a few things up.

Night of the Creeps – 1986 – United States

Night of the Creeps immediately establishes its absurd tone. Pudgy alien dwarves have a shootout aboard their spaceship until one launches a capsule of parasitic worms toward Earth. In 1959, a teenager discovers the capsule and becomes a host. In an unrelated subplot, an axe murderer escapes from an asylum and goes on a rampage. All this happens in the first fifteen minutes.

Sorority House Massacre

October 17, 2012 at 1:54 am (6 Heads, Sorority House Massacre) (, , , )

Sorority House Massacre – 1986 – United States

Nightmares haunt an amnesiac girl after she moves into a sorority house. Legend claims the house once hosted a brutal mass murder where a man knifed his parents and younger sisters (possibly referencing Ronald Defoe Jr. of Amityville fame). The amnesiac was the sole surviving sister—the memory of which she deeply repressed. Even stranger, she shares a psychic connection with her murderous institutionalized brother, through which he terrorizes her with his bloody fantasies. Soon enough, the brother escapes the institution, rushing to the sorority house for some inevitable stabbing. Suddenly, Sorority House Massacre becomes much more like Halloween (1978).

Hell Night

Hell Night – 1981 – United States

During a fraternity initiation, four teens stay in a “haunted” manor. Pranksters rig the place with wailing speakers, ghostly projections, and monstrous manikins that don’t impress anyone. Real terror comes from super-strong deformed madmen who lurk the grounds, mangling trespassers. Certainly, the premise is uninspired, but Hell Night melds slasher and creature feature tropes enjoyably. Competent writing, acting, and effects help compensate for its lack of originality.

The House on Sorority Row

July 18, 2010 at 4:34 pm (7 Heads, House on Sorority Row) (, , , , )

The House on Sorority Row – 1983 – United States

While The House on Sorority Row may be rife with slasher clichés and logical inconsistencies (aren’t they all?), grim tone and clever (occasionally beautiful) production keep it interesting. Lacking the exploitative titillating nonsense usually undermining any sorority flick, Sorority Row has thrills even for jaded viewers.
