The Demon

The Demon – 1979 – South Africa

A psychotic killer with a mask (sometimes) and clawed gloves kills people by wrapping plastic bags around their heads. He stalks two beautiful young school teachers who like meditating and going out with guys. On the killer’s trail is a psychic detective. The detective doesn’t do anything and is arbitrarily killed early in the film—and not even by the killer. In the end, the killer chases one of the teachers around a house. The teacher gets naked for this part. She eventually defeats the killer with a Home Alone-style trap. She puts slippery soap on the floor, sprays her attacker with scalding water, and stabs him in the throat.

Haunts

August 13, 2017 at 6:37 pm (5 Heads, Haunts) (, , , , )

Haunts – 1977 – United States

Haunts takes place in a small mountain town where there is nothing to do but gossip, go to church, and drive around drunk. A maniac in a ski mask starts raping women and stabbing them with scissors. Ingrid is a Swedish woman who lives on an isolated farm. She believes the maniac has a vendetta against her and suspects every man in town at one point or another. As the plot progresses, evidence suggests that Ingrid might be delusional. She has traumatic childhood memories of being sexually abused and witnessing the death of her mother. In the present day, many of the characters she interacts with might be figments of her imagination. As the maniac closes in on Ingrid, it becomes less and less clear if there is a maniac at all. By the film’s ending, fantasy and reality have been thoroughly blended and nothing makes much sense.

The Witches’ Mountain

February 5, 2017 at 10:36 pm (3 Heads, Witches' Mountain) (, )

The Witches’ Mountain – 1975 – Spain

In the first scene of The Witches’ Mountain, a woman returns to her house and discovers something amiss. One of her wigs has been cut up, a doll has been impaled, and her cat has been killed. It’s the work of a little girl (maybe the woman’s daughter) and her pet snake. The woman then lights the bratty girl on fire. This scene is mostly unrelated to the rest of the film.

A photographer breaks up with his girlfriend (the woman in the first scene) and takes a trip to the mountains where he meets a beautiful new girlfriend. The photographer and his girlfriend stay in a decrepit mountain village occupied by a single old lady. Roaming through the woods is a coven of witches who kidnap the travelers and abuse them in magic rituals.

Sisters of Death

July 25, 2016 at 2:46 am (5 Heads, Sisters of Death) (, )

Sisters of Death – 1976 – United States

Sisters of Death opens with a cult-like sorority initiation. Girls in veils play a ritualized version of Russian roulette. The gun is not supposed to be loaded, but it is (of course) and one girl is shot in the head. The police declare the death an accident and no one goes to jail (which seems unrealistic). Seven years later, the former sorority girls receive mysterious invitations to a reunion at an isolated desert hacienda. The women are suspicious but attend anyway. Upon arriving, they are sealed in by an electric fence, along with the two hapless men who gave them a ride. The hacienda’s owner is the father of the dead sorority girl. He reveals his identity to the women, taunts them, and murders them one by one. Meanwhile, the two men help the women escape.
