Snuff – 1976 – United States/Argentina
A man named Satan leads a cult of deranged hippie women to take drugs, have sex, and commit murder. The premise roughly approximates the real life murder of actress Sharon Tate by Charles Manson’s “family” in 1969. However, Snuff (originally released in 1971 as Slaughter) gained notoriety when it was re-released in 1976 and marketed as a genuine snuff film. Without the knowledge of the original filmmakers, an additional scene was grafted onto the end of the film. The scene allegedly depicts the cast and crew of Slaughter dismembering a woman on set. The effects are obviously fake, but the tasteless marketing gimmick captured people’s perverse imaginations and helped popularize the urban legend of the snuff film.
