The Terror – 1963 – United States

1806: A French army officer named Andre is separated from his regiment. Wandering France’s coastal wilderness, he encounters a beautiful woman named Helene. She mysteriously vanishes and he scours the countryside for her. Entering an old witch’s secluded hut, Andre asks about Helene. The witch suspiciously denies the mysterious woman’s existence. Later, Andre comes upon the decrepit castle of Baron von Leppe. The melancholy baron knows of Helene and believes she is the ghost of his wife. He regretfully describes how he killed her after a jealous tiff twenty years ago. Andre, obsessed with Helene, refuses to believe she is dead. Despite the witch’s and baron’s efforts to stop him, he investigates further and uncovers the dark history of Castle von Leppe. By the film’s end, the castle is destroyed in a flood, the baron drowns, the witch is struck by lightning, and Helene’s face melts off.

After a millionaire dies, his heirs congregate at his mansion for the reading of his will. The will reveals that all the money is hidden in the mansion and the heirs must find it. The millionaire’s crooked lawyer hires thugs to kill the heirs so he will inherit everything. Also at the mansion is a mischievous ghost girl (with an invisible bikini), some dopey bikers, and a busload of teenage surfers who just want to have a good time.

The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow – 1959 – United States

On their quest for fun, a friendly club of teenage hot rodders struggle with juvenile delinquents, traffic cops, and stodgy parents. After the broke teens are evicted from their clubhouse, they occupy a haunted mansion. Secretly living in the mansion is Paul Blaisdell, who played the monster in The Day the World Ended (1955), It Conquered the World (1956), The She-Creature (1956), and Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957). Upset because he did not get a role in Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), he dresses in a monster suit and menaces the teens.

The Dunwich Horror – 1970 – United States

At Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts, a female student attends a lecture on the Necronomicon. The Necronomicon, an ancient tome of occult lore, is coveted by a warlock from the nearby town of Dunwich. With hypnotic powers, he seduces the student to help steal the book. After discovering its secrets, the couple perform a sexual ritual to summon extradimensional beings known as the Old Ones. Only the student’s professor and her best friend can stop the ritual and prevent doom for all mankind.

Head

Head – 1968 – United States

After the cancellation of The Monkees television series, The Monkees and Jack Nicholson smoked weed, dropped acid, and devised Head. Head is a plotless collection of surreal vignettes. At various points, The Monkees make out with mermaids, star in a Western film, fight in Vietnam, find a Coke machine in a desert and destroy it with a tank, transform into dandruff, and get sucked into a vacuum cleaner. The imagery is funny, weird, and eerie. Scenes of people turning into manikins are uncanny. Also, the famous footage of Nguyễn Văn Lém’s execution is shown to disturbing effect. Musical interludes by The Monkees’ are spread throughout the film.
