The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini – 1966 – United States

After a millionaire dies, his heirs congregate at his mansion for the reading of his will. The will reveals that all the money is hidden in the mansion and the heirs must find it. The millionaire’s crooked lawyer hires thugs to kill the heirs so he will inherit everything. Also at the mansion is a mischievous ghost girl (with an invisible bikini), some dopey bikers, and a busload of teenage surfers who just want to have a good time.

The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini is the last film in American International Pictures’ Beach Party series. These screwball musical comedies feature teens dancing, partying, surfing, and falling in love while on summer vacation at the beach. Ghost in the Invisible Bikini transplants the formula into a haunted house and adds an Old Dark House-style plot. A huge cast of wacky characters makes the film chaotic, and the plot has very little logic even for this sort of movie. The film’s climax is in the mansion’s funhouse-like torture dungeon. Human actors impersonate mechanical marionettes and look pretty freaky. A girl is tied to a log and sent toward a buzzsaw.

Reggie the Ripper (played by Basil Rathbone) is the crooked attorney with a “phony British accent” (Rathbone’s accent is real). Sinistra is his smoking hot, murderous, and nearsighted daughter. One of Reggie’s bumbling thugs is named J. Sinister Hulk. Bobby (a.k.a. “Goo-Goo”) is a numbskull surfer who ignores his rock singer girlfriend (played by Nancy Sinatra). There is a girl inexplicably named Princess Yolanda who has a pet gorilla named Monstro. She travels with an offensive Native American caricature named Chicken Feather. Eric Von Zipper (a staple of the Beach Party series) once again leads his gang of moronic bikers. He provides the film’s funniest jokes as well as its stupidest. Boris Karloff plays a ghost. A cheap looking blob monster also appears.

Rating: 6/10 Shrunken Heads. Ghost in the Invisible Bikini is a lot like an episode of Scooby-Doo, especially when Goo-Goo sees monsters that vanish into secret doors before anyone else notices them.
