Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America – 1991 – United States

Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America is a satirical documentary composed entirely of stock footage from sci-fi films, newsreels, advertisements, and training films. In ninety-nine brief chapters (with titles like “Pagan Necromancy”, “Rivers Turn to Blood and Run Upstream”, and “Exterminating Angels”), the film describes how aliens arranged the events of the Cold War by manipulating countries in Latin America. These aliens (called the Quetzalcoatl) are mutant birds who breed with snakes and live in cities of their own excrement in the Earth’s hollow interior. They are responsible for the Kennedy assassination, the rise of Fidel Castro, Howard Hughes’ erratic behavior, the Easter Island Moai, the Bermuda Triangle, and the sinking of Atlantis.

Tribulation 99 is pretty crazy. Strange stock footage is mixed with scenes from Godzilla (1954), Tarantula (1955), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), and countless other sci-fi films. These clips are edited into a fast-paced montage, along with collaged music and sound effects, and rambling paranoid narration. The result is very psychedelic.

Tribulation 99 was created by artist Craig Baldwin. Also on the Other Cinema Digital DVD release are other short films by Baldwin.  Wild Gunman (1978) uses footage from western films, advertisements, cartoons, and video games to make a comment (probably) about cultural imperialism.  RocketKitKongoKit (1986) uses news footage to detail a conspiracy relating to President Joseph-Désiré Mobutu of Zaire and a German manufacturer of military missile systems.

Rating: 8/10 Shrunken Heads. These remind me of the movies I made in art school.
