Prince of Space – 1959 – Japan

Dictator Phantom from the planet Krankor plots to take over Earth. Against death rays, caustic gas, and a tank that tunnels underground, Earth’s military has no chance. A shoeshine boy (and foster father of two orphans) transforms into the superheroic Prince of Space. With his laser wand and flying saucer, Prince defeats Phantom and saves the day.

Prince of Space is based on the Japanese television series Planet Prince (1958-1959). It is highly imitative of the Super Giant series (1957-1959), and both series feature a caped alien superhero.

Prince of Space is too juvenile for adults and too plodding for (modern) children, but fans of Japanese tokusatsu series might be entertained. The simple special effects are plentiful, but the outlandish costumes are the highlight. Prince looks cool in his masked helmet. Phantom has a big beak-like nose, a spiky mustache, and an antenna on his head. On his home planet, he lives in a medieval castle guarded by a giant who resembles Quark from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He also drives a hearse with a laser cannon on the back.

Rating: 5/10 Shrunken Heads. Prince’s lasers cannot kill. Instead, they make people grab their heads and run away.
