The Ridge – 2005 – United States

Five young people vacation at a luxury house in the mountains. Eventually an insane mountain man called the Ridge Runner arrives and chases them around with an axe.

The Ridge is mostly unremarkable. The movie’s first half develops its unlikable characters. Two brothers bicker. A guy and his girlfriend make out constantly. Another guy jealously watches his ex-girlfriend. The rambling dialogue seems partially improvised and is very awkward.

In The Ridge’s second half, the young people are hunted by the faceless hoodie-wearing Ridge Runner. They behave illogically, stopping to talk as the killer pursues them, and not escaping the house despite several opportunities. There are a few tense moments though. A girl goes into diabetic shock, complicating attempts to flee. There is also a surprising scene where one of the young people (believed to be killed) revives to fight the Ridge Runner after everyone else dies.

Unexpectedly for a movie of this caliber, The Ridge has some effective visuals. The constantly moving camera is dynamic. There is a 15 minute continuous shot as the camera roams around the house, eavesdropping on the characters. Moody low-key lighting (including some attractive scenes at dusk) create ambiance. An indoor pool location is also used effectively, complete with underwater shots.

Rating: 4/10 Shrunken Heads. The soft rock soundtrack is really bad.
