Zeiram – 1991 – Japan

Iria is an alien bounty hunter. Along with Bob, her A.I. partner, she tracks a monster named Zeiram to modern day Earth. To prevent collateral damage, Iria creates an artificial dimension to act as a battlefield. Unfortunately, two bumbling Earthling electricians are also trapped inside. Iria and the Earthlings must join forces to destroy the nearly invincible Zeiram.

Zeiram is about non-stop science fiction action and not much else. Iria is a spunky armed-to-the-teeth babe. Zeiram is a slimy mutant who vaguely resembles a man wearing a Noh mask and a straw hat. The two face off with an arsenal of guns, bombs, and gadgets. Iria performs acrobatic martial arts, and encases things in crystalline force fields. Zeiram spawns dwarf-like monsters from seeds, and transforms into an insectoid skeleton. The two electricians wear outrageous green, yellow, and purple work uniforms, and cause some damage with a car and a backhoe. Zeiram features lots of pyrotechnics and flashing lights.

What Zeiram lacks in scope, it makes up for with vivaciousness. The characters are likable, the monster is memorable, and it does not take itself too seriously. Zeiram is followed by Iria: Zeiram the Animation (1994) and Zeiram 2 (1994).

Rating: 5/10 Shrunken Heads. Iria carries a plastic-wrapped transparent cockroach as a snack. I hoped for more details about this.
