Let Me Die a Woman – 1977 – United States

Let Me Die a Woman is a documentary about transgendered men undergoing sex reassignment surgery. It is hosted by Dr. Leo Wollman, who awkwardly reads cue cards and describes himself as a doctor, surgeon, psychologist, and minister. Wollman interviews and physically examines various transsexuals. The film also features hokey dramatized sex scenes (where the men do not even have erections), and a reenactment of a man severing his penis with a chisel. In the most memorable scene, the viewer is treated to (potentially traumatizing) footage of a genuine sex change surgery.

Let Me Die a Woman is incredibly graphic! There is much frontal nudity, and a lengthy and explicit examination of a transgendered man’s genitals. The sex change surgery footage is especially gross. I am not squeamish, but I could not watch as the surgeon incised a penis and stripped the skin off it.

You might assume Let Me Die a Woman is an exploitation film, particularly since it was produced and directed by Doris Wishman (famous for her sexploitation flicks starring Chesty Morgan). However, Let Me Die a Woman is actually very sincere. Dr. Leo Wollman and the interviewees are all candid. Sex change surgery is presented in a positive light, but without trivializing its challenges.

Rating: 7/10 Shrunken Heads. I learned a lot. Also, the dildo with the built-in squirt gun was pretty inventive.
