Fingerprints Don’t Lie – 1951 – United States

A crooked ex-police commissioner beats the mayor (of an indeterminate city) to death with a telephone. A hapless artist is framed for the crime, so the artist’s wife teams up with a forensic investigator to crack the case. The always irritating Sid Melton plays a girl crazy photographer who does not know how to use a camera.

Fingerprints Don’t Lie is a routine but effective crime drama by director Sam Newfield. It features a cast of hardworking B actors, including Richard Travis, Lyle Talbot, Sheila Ryan, and the unforgettable and unforgivable Sid Melton. While the film’s plot is unimaginative, its focus on “scientific investigation” is notable. There is an interesting science lesson about how police use fingerprints, palm prints, and hair samples to identify people. Also, the murderer uses a photographic process to forge fingerprints.

Rating: 5/10 Shrunken Heads. A tall blonde European model appears in several scenes. For such a tiny role, she has quite a few lines, but her thick accent makes them all indecipherable.
