Hercules and Tyrants of Babylon

Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon – 1964 – Italy

Hercules goes to Babylon to rescue his enslaved girlfriend, the queen of Hellenes (a.k.a. Greece). In the process, he frees a legion of slaves and destroys the city. However, Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon actually has little to do with Hercules. Instead, the plot focuses on the machinations of the Babylonian royal family and the meddling king of Assyria. Hercules just moves heavy stuff and bashes people with an enormous club.

Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon is more political than a Hercules film should be. Lacking monsters, magic, or any element of fantasy, the result is boring. At least the climax is appropriately epic as Babylon crumbles and hundreds of Assyrian horsemen attack. Peter Lupus (of Mission Impossible fame) is charismatic too, but he barely speaks.

Rating: 4/10 Shrunken Heads. In the bowels of Babylon is a winch that razes the entire city when turned. How absurd and awesome is that?
