I’ll Get You

I’ll Get You – 1952 – England

Across the world, scientists and engineers are kidnapped and presumably smuggled into the U.S.S.R. An FBI agent tracks the kidnappers to England and teams up with a pretty British agent. The two thwart the plot and develop a romance.

You might have expected more from I’ll Get You’s evocative title, or possibly confused it with I’ll Get You For This (1952), also starring George Raft. I’ll Get You is an unexciting British spy thriller elevated only by Raft, and he even seems bored. The American Raft frequently played gangsters, and his tough, weary, monotone performance nicely contrasts the overly polite English. He and his spunky (much) younger girlfriend lack chemistry, but some scenes are cute. When they first meet, he tries to disarm her and she puts him in a hammerlock. What a woman!

Raft, as the FBI agent, sneaks into England under dubious circumstances. For a while, his motivation seems unscrupulous. Once the plot is actually established, you’ll probably wish it had gone that direction instead. I’ll Get You is competent and entertaining enough, but without much more to recommend it.

Rating: 4/10 Shrunken Heads. I’ll Get You‘s title just begs for an exclamation point.
